Meet Model "Laken Giles"

Model Laken Giles
ZOEY: Laken (love that name by the way) can you share with us your favorite parts of modeling?

LAKEN: I love seeing the end product of a shoot or commercial but I really enjoy every step of the way. I enjoy castings, believe it or not even if I don't get the job. I take acting and auditioning classes and this is my time to practice my skills. I LOVE the hair and makeup, and styling the more creative the better! I may study fashion, or some kind of production for a career. I have met so many talented, nice people on jobs and many of us keep in touch.

ZOEY: Is there anything in modeling that surprised you or was different than you expected?

LAKEN: Castings and print jobs can be very quick and commercials can be very, very long. It is not a beauty contest, there are many things involved in you getting chosen for a job.

ZOEY: How has modeling affected your regular life?

LAKEN: I go to regular school and have had to miss more than normal this past year. My mom is very honest with the school about what I am doing and all my teachers have been great about letting me make up work. My Friends and I don't talk about my modeling a whole lot but sometimes they ask me questions and I think they think it's cool. I have one younger brother than me and he could care less about modeling, except when he sees me get a big pay check and he thinks he would like to give it a try but I don't think he has the patience:)

ZOEY: Do you have a funny story or embarrassing modeling moment you can share with us?

LAKEN:The time I was cast as a 'soccer kid' just getting out of a van and it turned into me
having to “full on” play soccer which is not a pretty sight. This was for a commercial and I
noticed they cut all that part out (smart of them). Also, when we were new we had a casting
with a very grumpy casting director. He was very dramatic and intimidating. He obviously
had his favorites in the crowd and I wasn't one of them. I forgot my comp card (bad) so my
mom frantically found the only photo she had. The tiniest passport size photo of me in her
wallet. His look could have killed when I handed it to him. The good part of this story is that
the client did pick me and it was my first commercial. Last funny thing, I have done several
'overnight' shoots. When they shoot from 8 at night till 6 in the morning everything starts getting
funny about 2 a.m.

ZOEY: What kinds of things do you like to do outside
of modeling?

LAKEN:ALOT! Lots of church activities, you know I
want to go on a mission soon! I am a dancer, I do ballet,
pointe, jazz, and modern. The last two summers I studied
at Joffery ballet. I take dance class 5 days a week and am
studying at a place called the Nutmeg Conservatory in
Connecticut this summer. I also go to a camp called Camp
Illahee in NC for 2 weeks, its' just fun in the mountains
with a bunch of great girls. I have been with the same group of girl scouts now since first grade. Some of them dance, are very into theater, soccer, fashion, etc. We are in the middle of a huge project called the Prom project right now. We are doing a boutique for girls who are unable to afford the things they need for 2013 prom. We are going to have hair and make up stations, dresses, accessories and more. Our troop is going to Washington DC in June for the 100th  anniversary of girls scouts, it's called “Rock the Mall.”

They expect may thousands of girls from around the world. I like to go to the
Movies with my friends, ride bikes, hang out, and watch shows like America's Next Top Model,
Toddlers and Tiaras and Dance Moms.

ZOEY: Thank you Laken for sharing about yourself! Do you have any final modeling tips you
can leave with us?

LAKEN: I couldn't have done anything without my mom because she researched everything,
got me all my agents, and basically drives me around the world for this. My advice for girls
already modeling is to be nice, polite, and helpful to everyone you meet on a job. Also, take
in all the behind the scene action with the crew it's interesting. Make connections with the
people you are working with. I took a workshop with Adrian D'Mante from Suite Life of Zach
and Cody and he had great advice. Study and practice to do your best at castings/auditions but
afterwards put it behind you and only look ahead. This is what I do.
